Every animated video you scroll past on YouTube, from a hand-drawn doodle to a fully rendered 3D short film, relies on the same basic trick: showing your eyes a rapid sequence of still images until your brain reads them as movement. This illusion is the foundation of persistence of vision, and mastering it is what separates a static picture from a piece of animation. For anyone studying multimedia and video production, understanding how animation actually works, and which technique fits which project, is a practical skill, not just theory.

What exactly is animation?

Animation is the process of designing, drawing, modelling, or photographing a sequence of images so that when played back quickly, they create the illusion of continuous motion. The underlying science combines two effects: the eye briefly retaining an image after it disappears, and the brain’s tendency to perceive rapid still frames as fluid motion. Film traditionally runs at 24 frames per second, though animators often work “on twos,” drawing one image for every two frames to save time while still keeping motion believable, as explained by FutureLearn’s animation course materials.

What changes between animation styles is not this underlying principle but the method used to create each frame, by hand, with a computer, or by physically moving objects in front of a camera. That’s where the three major forms of animation come in.

2D classical hand-drawn animation

2D or traditional animation is the oldest and most recognisable form. Artists draw each frame individually, originally on paper or transparent celluloid sheets (hence the term “cel animation”), with slight changes between frames to convey movement. Studios like Disney built entire empires on this process, refining it through the 20th century into an art form defined by expressive characters and fluid motion.

Rotoscoping: tracing reality into drawings

One of the most influential 2D techniques is rotoscoping, where animators trace over live-action footage frame by frame to capture realistic human movement. The method was pioneered by animator Max Fleischer in the early 20th century for his Koko the Clown cartoons, and Disney later adopted it for classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Cinderella. Today, the same underlying idea survives digitally in software like Adobe After Effects, where artists trace over recorded footage to build animated sequences or isolate elements for visual effects work.

Modern 2D animation has largely moved from physical cels to digital drawing tablets and software such as Toon Boom or Adobe Animate, but the core skill remains the same: an artist’s hand controlling every frame. This makes 2D animation labour-intensive but also gives it a distinct, warm, hand-crafted quality that many viewers find nostalgic and instantly appealing.

3D computer graphics animation

3D animation, often called CGI (computer-generated imagery), builds characters and environments as digital models inside software rather than drawing them frame by frame. The process typically involves modelling a 3D object, rigging it with a digital skeleton so it can bend and move, texturing and lighting the model, and finally rendering it into finished frames.

Keyframing and motion capture

Animators typically pose a character at key points in a sequence, known as keyframes, and let the software calculate the in-between motion, a process much faster than drawing every frame by hand. For highly realistic human movement, studios also use motion capture, recording an actual performer’s movements with sensors and mapping that data onto a digital model. This is how many blockbuster animated films and video games achieve lifelike motion. 3D animation has become the dominant commercial technique globally; industry data shows it already holds the largest revenue share among animation styles, largely because it scales well across films, games, advertising, and architectural visualisation.

Stop-motion animation

Stop-motion is the most physically hands-on of the three forms. Instead of drawing or modelling digitally, animators manipulate real objects, clay figures, puppets, cut-out paper shapes, or everyday items, moving them slightly and photographing a frame after each tiny adjustment. Played back in sequence, these still photographs create motion.

Claymation, puppets, and cutouts

Several distinct techniques fall under the stop-motion umbrella. Claymation uses malleable clay or plasticine figures that can be reshaped frame by frame, famously used by studios like Aardman Animations. Puppet animation uses jointed models with movable armatures inside, giving animators precise control over poses. Cutout animation uses flat paper or card shapes moved incrementally beneath a camera. Government data also points to India building one of the largest anime and animation fan bases worldwide, a trend expected to contribute significantly to global growth in animation interest over the coming years. For students, this means animation skills, even basic 2D explainer videos or simple stop-motion product demos, are increasingly valuable for careers in advertising, YouTube content creation, e-learning, and corporate multimedia production.

Choosing the right technique for your own project

If you’re producing content for a YouTube channel, a college project, or a small business, the right animation style depends on your resources, not just your creative preference.

Limited budget, need for a distinct visual identity: 2D animation using free or low-cost software works well for explainer videos, educational content, and channel branding.

Need for realism or complex environments: 3D animation is better suited to product visualisation, architectural walkthroughs, or game-style content, though it typically demands more technical skill and processing power.

Want a handcrafted, memorable feel with minimal software costs: Stop-motion can be shot with a smartphone and basic lighting, making it accessible for creators without animation software experience, though it demands patience and careful frame-by-frame planning.
