Chatbots exist to answer exactly these questions without making a human agent repeat the same script hundreds of times a day. In India, this shift has been rapid: research from ServiceNow found that a large majority of Indian consumers now rely on AI chatbots to check complaint status, get product recommendations, or work through self-help guides. For businesses, this frees human staff to deal with the complaints and negotiations that actually need judgement, empathy, or authority to resolve.
Voice assistants: Alexa and Siri as customer-facing tools
Voice assistants have moved from being home gadgets to genuine business channels. Companies build skills for Alexa and equivalent tools for Siri and Google Assistant so customers can reorder a product, check an order, or get support hands-free, without opening an app or typing a word. Voice assistants like Alexa now support features such as real-time call captioning and personalised customer profiles, which businesses use to make support faster and more accessible, particularly for customers who find typing inconvenient or difficult.

Perhaps the clearest example of how far conversational AI has come is Google Duplex, a system Google built to place phone calls on a person’s behalf. When someone asks their assistant to book a table or a haircut, Duplex can call the business directly and hold a natural-sounding conversation to complete the booking, then confirm the appointment back to the user. It is a useful illustration of a broader trend: businesses are increasingly comfortable letting AI handle low-value, repetitive conversations, while keeping humans in charge of anything that needs discretion or relationship-building.

As more business communication moves online, from contracts to invoices to supplier updates, the question of whether a message or record can be trusted becomes critical. Blockchain technology addresses this by creating records that are extremely difficult to alter after the fact. Blockchain and related distributed ledger technologies can reduce risk, cut compliance costs, and make contract fulfilment more automatic and secure, since every party works off the same verified version of a document or transaction instead of separate copies that need to be reconciled. For businesses, this matters most in supply chain communication, cross-border payments, and any exchange where both sides need proof that nothing was quietly changed.

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) let a business communicate not just with words but with an experience the customer can see and interact with. Instead of describing a sofa’s dimensions, a furniture brand can let a customer place a 3D model of it in their own living room through their phone camera. AR overlays digital information onto the physical world, letting shoppers try on products or visualise them in real life before buying, which reduces hesitation and cuts down on returns. VR goes a step further, immersing the customer in a fully digital environment, useful for virtual showrooms, property walkthroughs, or training simulations.

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to everyday objects, sensors, machines, delivery vehicles, even shelves, that are connected to the internet and can share data automatically. IoT allows these smart objects to communicate with each other and with other internet-enabled devices, exchanging data and performing tasks without needing a person to intervene. For a business, this means a warehouse sensor can flag low stock before a human notices, a delivery van can update its location in real time, or a smart shelf can trigger a reorder the moment it runs low. Communication, in this sense, stops being something only people do; devices now hold their own ongoing conversation in the background, and businesses simply act on what that conversation reveals.
LiFi: communication at the speed of light
Most people have heard of WiFi, but few know about its light-based cousin. LiFi, short for Light Fidelity, transmits data using the visible light spectrum instead of radio waves, typically through LED bulbs that flicker faster than the human eye can detect. LiFi is a bidirectional wireless system that uses LED or infrared light to multiply the speed and bandwidth available compared to WiFi, 3G, and 4G. Because it piggybacks on existing LED lighting, it is also considered more energy-efficient, and because light cannot pass through walls, it is naturally harder to intercept than a radio signal leaking outside a building. For businesses in sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, or aviation, where radio interference is a genuine problem, LiFi offers a practical, secure alternative for fast internal communication.
Choosing the right mix for the business
Not every business needs every one of these tools at once. A small retailer might start with a WhatsApp Business account and a simple chatbot. A larger enterprise might already be layering IoT sensors, blockchain-secured contracts, and AR-based product demos into a single customer journey. What ties all of this together is responsiveness: customers expect a business to notice what they need and act on it quickly, whether that’s a query answered instantly, a package tracked automatically, or a product tried on before it’s bought. Technology has made that responsiveness possible at a scale no human team could manage alone, but the businesses that use it well are still the ones that remember a chatbot or a sensor is only useful if it eventually leads back to solving a real customer problem.
