Open ten different e-commerce sites and you will notice something odd. Some scream discounts within seconds of loading. Others quietly showcase their catalogue and let the product do the talking. A few ask you to log in before showing you anything useful at all. None of this is accidental. Every e-commerce website is built around a design model, a deliberate choice about what the site is trying to achieve for the business and how it should behave to get there. Understanding these models is one of the more practical skills you can take away from a retailing or e-commerce course, because it explains why platforms look and behave the way they do, and it gives you a framework to evaluate or build one yourself.

Why e-commerce design models matter

An e-commerce design model is essentially the underlying strategy that shapes a website’s structure, content, and features. It answers a simple question: what is this site actually for? Is it meant to build recognition for a brand, push a specific promotion, help shoppers compare and decide, or tailor the experience to each visitor? The choice matters because a website designed for one purpose rarely performs well at another. A catalogue-heavy brand site with no comparison tools will frustrate a shopper who wants to weigh options, while a deal-driven promotional site will do little to build long-term trust in a brand.

These models also connect to a bigger economic idea. Digital commerce exists partly because it lowers the cost of finding, comparing, and completing transactions. Research published by the OECD notes that technology-driven improvements in commerce cut transaction costs, give participants access to more information, and widen the range of products they can reach. Every design model discussed below is really a different way of capturing that value, whether by informing, persuading, aggregating, or personalising.

The brand awareness and image-building model

This model treats the website as a digital storefront whose main job is to build familiarity and trust. The design leans on detailed product information, consistent visual identity, and content that positions the company as credible and current. It rarely pushes for an immediate sale. Instead, it wants the visitor to leave remembering the brand and associating it with quality.

This approach works particularly well for smaller or newer businesses, since the barriers to setting it up are relatively low. A well-photographed catalogue, a clear “about us” section, and consistent tone across pages can go a long way before any large marketing budget is involved. Fashion, wellness, and D2C (direct-to-consumer) brands in India frequently use this model to establish themselves before scaling into paid advertising or marketplace listings.

What a brand awareness site typically includes

Look for a strong homepage narrative, an editorial tone in product descriptions rather than plain specification lists, and visual consistency across every page. Storytelling is the operative word here – the site is less interested in comparison shopping and more interested in making an impression.

The promotional model

Where the brand awareness model plays a long game, the promotional model is built for urgency. Its design pulls the visitor’s attention toward discounts, limited-time offers, bundled deals, or exclusive access. Countdown timers, bold banners, and prominent “sale” tags are the visual signature of this approach.

The goal is conversion, not necessarily loyalty. E-commerce sites using this model often rely on incentives such as coupons, cashback, or free digital add-ons to pull traffic toward a purchase decision quickly. It is especially visible during festival shopping seasons in India, when platforms redesign their homepages almost entirely around sale events rather than everyday browsing.

The trade-off worth knowing

Promotional design is effective at driving short-term spikes in traffic and sales, but it can undercut brand image if overused. Constant discounting trains customers to wait for the next sale instead of paying full price, and it can be difficult to reverse once a brand has trained its audience to expect markdowns. A useful discipline is to treat promotion as a seasonal layer on top of a stable brand identity, rather than the entire design strategy.

The information mediation (infomediary) model

Some of the most useful sites in e-commerce do not sell anything directly. They exist to organise information about products, sellers, or prices so that buyers can make faster, better-informed decisions. This is the information mediation, or infomediary, model. Comparison portals, review aggregators, and price-tracking tools all fall under this category.

The term itself is a shortened form of “information intermediary.” As described in a widely cited piece from Communications of the ACM, infomediaries bring buyers and suppliers together in a shared virtual marketplace, playing a role in the digital economy comparable to what wholesalers and retailers do in physical markets. Their value comes from reducing the effort a shopper has to spend hunting across multiple sites, and from giving sellers, especially smaller ones, visibility they would otherwise struggle to get.

An Indian example worth knowing

India has its own large-scale experiment in information mediation at the infrastructure level: the Open Network for Digital Commerce, or ONDC. Rather than being a shopping app itself, ONDC is designed as a shared digital protocol that lets buyer apps, seller apps, and logistics providers interconnect, similar in spirit to how UPI standardised digital payments. According to the Press Information Bureau, Government of India, the initiative promotes open networks for the exchange of goods and services across digital and electronic channels, using open specifications that are not tied to any single platform. For small retailers who cannot build their own polished e-commerce site, this kind of information mediation layer offers a way to be discovered without designing a storefront from scratch.

The customization model

The fourth model treats every visitor as an individual rather than part of a mass audience. Product recommendations, dynamic homepages, personalised email offers, and build-your-own-product tools are all expressions of the customization model. The underlying idea is that a website which adapts to a shopper’s browsing history, preferences, or stated needs will convert better than one that shows the same page to everyone.

This is not a minor design choice. According to McKinsey, personalisation can lift revenue by 5 to 15 percent, improve marketing return on investment by 10 to 30 percent, and cut customer acquisition costs by as much as half. The same research finds that companies growing faster than their peers earn a notably larger share of their revenue from personalised experiences.

How customization shows up on a site

Building this well requires investment in data collection and analytics, which is why it tends to appear on mature, well-funded platforms rather than early-stage sites. It is also worth remembering that personalisation only works if it feels helpful rather than intrusive. A site that over-collects data or repeats the same recommendation endlessly can erode the trust that a brand awareness strategy worked to build in the first place.

In practice, most successful platforms blend elements of all four rather than committing to just one. A large marketplace might use brand-building content on its homepage, run festival-season promotions, function as an infomediary through seller comparisons, and layer in a personalised recommendation engine, all within the same site.

Why this matters for India’s e-commerce growth

The design choices behind a website are not just academic. India’s e-commerce sector is expanding quickly enough that getting the underlying model right has real commercial stakes. Industry estimates compiled by IBEF put the market on a compound annual growth path of around 27 percent, with rising internet penetration, digital payments, and improving logistics infrastructure driving much of that expansion, alongside supportive government policy. As more first-time online shoppers enter the market, particularly from smaller towns, the design model a business chooses will shape whether it can build trust with a new audience, compete on price during high-traffic shopping seasons, help shoppers discover it among thousands of alternatives, or hold on to customers once acquired.

For a student or an early-stage entrepreneur, the practical takeaway is to treat these four models as building blocks rather than rigid categories. Start by asking what the business genuinely needs most right now, awareness, sales velocity, discoverability, or retention, and design accordingly, adding the other elements as the platform matures.
