Somewhere between placing an order at midnight and the delivery executive ringing your doorbell the next morning, an entire industry has quietly rebuilt how India shops. That gap between click and delivery is where e-tailing lives, and it has changed retail more in the last decade than the previous fifty years combined.

What is e-tailing?

E-tailing, short for electronic retailing, simply means selling goods and services over the internet. It covers everything from a five-person kurta brand selling through Instagram and a website, to a marketplace like Flipkart connecting lakhs of sellers with buyers across the country. The term is often used interchangeably with e-commerce, but there is a subtle difference: e-tailing focuses specifically on the retail transaction, while e-commerce is the broader umbrella that also includes payments, supply chain management, and B2B trade.

E-tailing operates through two broad models, and understanding the difference matters because the strategy, customers, and even the website design change depending on which one a business is chasing.

Business-to-consumer (B2C) e-tailing

This is the model most people picture when they hear online shopping. A business sells directly to an individual customer, whether that is a pair of shoes, a subscription box, or groceries delivered in ten minutes. Amazon, Myntra, and countless direct-to-consumer brands operate here, competing on price, convenience, and how quickly the product reaches your door.

Business-to-business (B2B) e-tailing

Here, the buyer is another business, not an individual. A garment manufacturer sourcing fabric from a supplier through an online catalogue, or a small retailer restocking inventory through IndiaMART, falls under this category. Order volumes are typically larger, relationships matter more than impulse appeal, and platforms like the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) have shown just how large this segment can grow when digitised well.

Why e-tailing has taken off in India

India’s shift to online retail has been unusually fast, and the numbers make that clear. The country’s e-retail market is projected to sustain a growth rate of more than 20 percent annually and scale to somewhere between 170 and 180 billion US dollars in gross merchandise value by 2030. That growth is not limited to metro shoppers either; a large share of new demand is coming from tier-2, tier-3, and even tier-4 towns, helped along by cheaper smartphones and affordable data.

Payments infrastructure deserves a lot of credit here. The Unified Payments Interface has become so deeply woven into daily commerce that it processes billions of transactions a month, and this frictionless payment layer is one reason Indian shoppers trust buying online in the first place. Quick commerce is another force reshaping the category, now accounting for roughly a tenth of India’s e-retail market and expected to double its share by 2030, as ten-minute grocery delivery moves from novelty to habit.

Even so, there is real headroom left. E-retail currently makes up only about 1.6 percent of India’s GDP, compared to 4 to 4.5 percent in Indonesia and 13 to 14 percent in China, which tells you this growth story is still in its early chapters rather than its final act.

What makes an e-tailing business actually work

Setting up a website and listing products is the easy part. Making the business sustainable requires getting a few fundamentals right, consistently.

A website that does the selling for you

In a physical store, a salesperson answers questions and nudges a hesitant customer. Online, the website has to do that job entirely on its own. Product pages need clear images, honest descriptions, visible reviews, and a checkout process that does not make the customer abandon their cart out of frustration. Load speed and mobile responsiveness matter just as much as design, since most Indian shoppers browse on their phones.

Marketing that finds the right shopper

Traffic does not arrive by accident. Search engine visibility, social media presence, influencer partnerships, and paid advertising all work together to pull the right customer to the right product. What separates good e-tailing marketing from wasteful spending is targeting: knowing which customer segment actually converts, rather than chasing broad reach for its own sake.

Getting the product from warehouse to doorstep

Distribution is where many e-tailing businesses quietly struggle. A brilliant website means nothing if the delivery is late, the product arrives damaged, or returns are a nightmare to process. Warehousing decisions, courier partnerships, and last-mile logistics decide whether a customer becomes a repeat buyer or a one-time visitor who leaves a poor review.

Turning customer data into decisions

Every click, cart addition, and abandoned purchase generates data, and successful e-tailers use it. Purchase history informs personalised recommendations, browsing patterns reveal which products to restock, and customer feedback loops shape everything from pricing to packaging. This is also where e-tailing pulls ahead of traditional retail: a physical store owner might know their regulars by face, but an online store can know its entire customer base by behaviour.

The rules e-tailers must follow in India

Online retail in India does not operate in a regulatory vacuum. The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, require e-tailers to disclose seller details, country of origin, and return policies clearly, and to set up proper grievance redressal mechanisms. Marketplaces can also be held responsible when a seller fails to deliver on a promise, which pushes platforms to vet their sellers more carefully rather than simply hosting anyone who signs up.

These rules exist because online shopping removes the face-to-face trust that a neighbourhood store naturally has. A shopper cannot examine the product before paying, so the law tries to rebuild that missing trust through disclosure and accountability.

The challenges that still hold e-tailers back

For all its growth, e-tailing has not fully solved some old problems. Delivery to remote areas remains expensive and slow, and the cost of last-mile logistics eats into already thin margins. Building trust is harder online, especially for newer or smaller brands competing against established marketplaces. Return rates in categories like fashion remain high, and every return costs money in reverse logistics. Competition is also brutal; discounting wars between large platforms have trained many Indian shoppers to wait for a sale rather than buy at full price, which squeezes profitability across the sector.

Where e-tailing in India is headed

One development worth watching closely is the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a government-backed initiative that aims to make e-commerce interoperable rather than locked inside a handful of dominant apps. Instead of every seller depending on Amazon or Flipkart’s ecosystem, ONDC allows buyers and sellers across different platforms to transact with each other using shared open protocols, similar in spirit to how UPI opened up digital payments. The goal, as explained by technology researchers tracking the initiative, is to reduce the concentration of power among a few large players and give small businesses equal visibility online.

Beyond ONDC, the direct-to-consumer segment is projected to reach 60 billion US dollars by 2030, while marketplaces are expected to grow alongside rather than replace these independent brands, according to industry projections. Grocery, still heavily underpenetrated online compared to categories like electronics or fashion, is likely to be the next big growth driver as quick commerce expands beyond metro cities.

Bringing it all together

E-tailing is not just about moving a shop online. It demands rethinking how a business builds trust, moves inventory, and understands its customers, all without the physical cues a traditional store relies on. The businesses that get this right treat their website, marketing, logistics, and data as one connected system rather than separate departments working in isolation.
