Every year, headlines announce record-breaking harvests in India, yet farmers still struggle with low incomes and agriculture’s share of the economy keeps shrinking. This is one of the more interesting paradoxes of the Indian economy: production numbers climb steadily, but the sector’s overall contribution to national income keeps falling. Understanding how major food crops are performing helps explain why agriculture remains central to India’s economic story, even as its share of GDP declines.

A shrinking share, an unshaken importance
Agriculture’s contribution to India’s Gross Value Added has been sliding for decades as industry and services have grown faster. According to the Economic Survey 2023-24, the sector now accounts for about 18.2 per cent of GDP at current prices, down from levels above 30 per cent a few decades ago.
But that declining percentage hides an inconvenient truth: agriculture still provides livelihood support to roughly 42.3 per cent of the population, according to the same survey. A large share of India’s rural households depend directly or indirectly on farming, which is why crop production trends matter far beyond farm gates. They influence food security, rural incomes, inflation, and export earnings all at once.
India’s place on the world food map
Few countries combine scale and diversity in food production the way India does. The country is recognised as the world’s largest producer of milk, pulses, and jute, and ranks as the second-largest producer of rice, wheat, sugarcane, groundnut, vegetables, fruit, and cotton, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization.

This diversity is not accidental. India’s agro-climatic range, from the Indo-Gangetic plains to the peninsular plateau, allows different crops to be grown across seasons and regions. Uttar Pradesh alone leads national production of wheat, sugarcane, and several other crops, largely due to fertile alluvial soil and access to irrigation, as noted by IIT Kanpur’s SATHEE resource portal.
The 2020-21 harvest: record output across the board
The 2020-21 crop year (July-June) stands out as a landmark year for Indian agriculture. Favourable monsoon rains, expanded acreage, and government procurement support pushed several crops to record output levels.

These figures, drawn from the government’s advance estimates, represented the country’s highest-ever output for each of these crops at the time, as reported by Business Standard. Total foodgrain production, which combines rice, wheat, pulses, and coarse cereals, crossed the 300-million-tonne mark for the first time that year.
Rice: the kharif powerhouse
Rice is grown mainly as a kharif crop, sown with the arrival of the south-west monsoon and harvested around autumn. West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh remain the largest producing states, benefiting from assured irrigation and high-yielding varieties. The record output in 2020-21 reflected both a well-distributed monsoon and steady expansion of the area under paddy cultivation.
Wheat: the rabi backbone
Wheat, sown after the monsoon and harvested in spring, is the dominant rabi crop across Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh. Assured government procurement at Minimum Support Price has historically encouraged farmers in this belt to keep expanding wheat acreage, which supports consistent output growth year after year.
Pulses: closing the protein gap
Pulses such as chana, tur, and moong are critical to Indian diets as an affordable protein source, particularly for vegetarian households. India already produces about a quarter of the world’s pulses, but domestic demand has historically outpaced supply, pushing the country to import to bridge the gap. The steady rise in pulses output through initiatives like the National Food Security Mission has gradually reduced this dependence on imports.
What’s driving this growth?
Several factors have combined to lift crop production over the past decade:
- Better monsoon distribution: Consecutive years of near-normal or above-normal rainfall have supported both kharif and rabi sowing.
- MSP-driven procurement: Assured minimum prices for rice, wheat, and select pulses encourage farmers to expand acreage under these crops.
- Irrigation expansion: Investment in canal networks, tube wells, and micro-irrigation has reduced dependence on rainfall alone.
- High-yielding seed varieties: Research institutions have released improved cultivars that boost yield per hectare.
- Government schemes: Programmes supporting soil health, credit access, and crop insurance have reduced production risk for farmers.
The output-productivity paradox
Rising total output is encouraging, but it does not automatically mean Indian agriculture is becoming more efficient. Much of the growth in production has come from expanding the area under cultivation and increasing cropping intensity, rather than from significantly higher yield per hectare. Indian yields for several major crops still trail those of countries like China and the United States. Structural issues such as fragmented landholdings, uneven irrigation access, and continued dependence on monsoon rainfall keep per-hectare productivity below its potential, a concern highlighted in agricultural economics research published in the International Journal For Multidisciplinary Research.
This is precisely why India’s food production numbers, while impressive in absolute terms, need to be read alongside productivity indicators. A country producing record tonnage while paying a large share of its workforce a modest income is still grappling with an efficiency problem, not just a production problem.
Recent trends: the momentum continues
The record-setting pattern seen in 2020-21 has largely persisted in subsequent years. Government estimates for 2024-25 point to further record production of rice, wheat, and maize, alongside strong growth in oilseeds like groundnut and soybean. Millets, promoted as nutritious and climate-resilient crops, have also seen a steady rise in both kharif and rabi output.
This continued growth trajectory suggests that the policy push around procurement support, irrigation, and improved seed technology is still yielding results, even as questions about long-term productivity and climate resilience remain open.
