Switch on a light bulb in Mumbai and there is a good chance the electricity travelling through the wire began its journey in a coal mine in Jharkhand, a solar farm in Rajasthan, or a dam in the Himalayas. India now generates and consumes more electricity than almost any country except China and the United States, with an installed power generation capacity that crossed 542 GW by May 2026. Behind that number sits a complex, evolving mix of energy resources: some ancient and polluting, some cutting-edge and clean, and some so ordinary that we barely notice them, like the firewood still burning in millions of rural kitchens. Understanding this mix is central to understanding India’s economic infrastructure.

Commercial versus non-commercial energy: The basic divide

Economists and planners usually split India’s energy resources into two broad categories. Commercial energy sources are bought and sold in the market and include coal, oil, natural gas, hydro power, and nuclear power. They power industries, transport, and modern households, and their consumption is closely tracked because it feeds directly into GDP growth. Non-commercial energy sources, on the other hand, are typically gathered rather than purchased. Fuel-wood, crop residue, and animal dung fall into this bucket. They rarely show up in national energy statistics with the same precision, yet they still meet a significant share of household energy needs, especially in rural India.

This divide is not just academic. It shapes who benefits from energy policy. Investment in commercial energy infrastructure like power plants and pipelines tends to serve industry and urban consumers first, while non-commercial energy use persists in areas that formal energy infrastructure has not yet reached.

Coal: The workhorse fuel that refuses to fade

Coal remains the backbone of Indian electricity generation. Domestic coal output reached a record 1,047.52 million tonnes in FY 2025-26, a nearly 5 percent rise over the previous year, with non-coking coal accounting for the bulk of this production. States like Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh hold the largest reserves and continue to dominate output.

Why India leans on coal

Coal is abundant within India’s own borders, relatively cheap to mine, and backed by decades of established mining and transport infrastructure. It provides the kind of round-the-clock, weather-independent power that a growing economy needs, unlike solar or wind, which depend on sunshine and wind speed. Base-load reliability is coal’s biggest advantage.

The costs that come with it

Coal is also India’s largest single contributor to carbon emissions and local air pollution. While rising domestic production has helped, coal imports still stood at over 240 million tonnes in FY 2025-26, and the country has historically spent billions of dollars importing coking coal for steel production and high-quality coal for blending. Reduced import dependence has already saved India close to 8 billion dollars in foreign exchange in a single year, showing how tightly energy security and economic stability are linked.

Oil and natural gas: India’s import vulnerability

If coal is India’s strength, oil is its weak spot. Domestic crude oil production has been shrinking as older fields mature, falling from around 29.7 million tonnes to 28 million tonnes over the last five years. As a result, India’s import dependence for crude oil touched a record 88.7 percent in 2025-26. That means nearly nine out of every ten barrels of crude processed in Indian refineries now comes from abroad, primarily from the Middle East, with growing volumes sourced from Russia and other regions since 2022.

Natural gas tells a similar, if slightly less extreme, story. Domestic output has grown modestly but not fast enough to keep pace with demand, pushing natural gas imports up by over 12 percent in a single year as India leans more heavily on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). This heavy reliance on imported hydrocarbons exposes the Indian economy to global price shocks, currency fluctuations, and geopolitical risk, which is one of the strongest arguments for accelerating the shift to domestically generated renewable power.

Hydro power: Clean, proven, and underused

Hydro power is India’s oldest large-scale clean energy source, built on the country’s Himalayan rivers and peninsular dams. Large hydro projects contribute over 50 GW of installed capacity today, concentrated in states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and the northeastern hill states. Hydro power is dispatchable, meaning it can be ramped up or down quickly to balance the grid, which makes it valuable as more intermittent solar and wind capacity comes online.

Yet hydro’s growth has slowed compared to solar and wind. Large dam projects face long gestation periods, environmental clearances, seismic risk in the Himalayan belt, and local resistance over displacement and ecological disruption. Pumped-storage hydro, which works almost like a giant battery, is now getting fresh policy attention precisely because it can help stabilise a grid increasingly powered by variable renewables.

Non-commercial energy: The quiet backbone of rural India

It is easy to assume India’s energy story is only about power plants and pipelines. But for a very large share of the population, energy still means firewood, dung cakes, and crop residue burned on traditional stoves. According to the National Family Health Survey, 41 percent of Indian households still use solid fuels for cooking, with rural dependence at 56.1 percent compared to just 9.5 percent in cities. In states like Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh, this figure crosses 70 to 80 percent.

Schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana have expanded LPG access significantly, but many households practise what researchers call fuel stacking: using LPG occasionally while still relying on gathered biomass for most cooking, mainly because refilling a gas cylinder is expensive relative to rural incomes. The consequences go beyond convenience. Indoor smoke from biomass burning is linked to serious respiratory, cardiovascular, and eye conditions, and household air pollution from biomass cooking fuel is estimated to be among the leading contributors to disease burden among Indian women. Addressing non-commercial energy use, then, is not just an energy policy question. It is a public health priority.

New and renewable energy: India’s fastest-growing frontier

The most dramatic shift in India’s energy resources over the last decade has happened in renewables. As of March 2026, India’s total non-fossil fuel electricity capacity stood at 283.46 GW, making up around half of the country’s total installed capacity, achieving India’s 2030 Paris Agreement target five years ahead of schedule.

Solar power

Solar is now the single largest renewable source in India, with installed capacity above 150 GW. Falling panel costs, large-scale solar parks in Rajasthan and Gujarat, and rooftop schemes for households and farmers have driven this growth. The PM-KUSUM scheme, aimed at solarising agricultural pumps, has been particularly effective at cutting diesel use in irrigation.

Wind power

Wind energy, concentrated along the coastlines of Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and parts of Andhra Pradesh, has crossed 56 GW of installed capacity. Offshore wind, though still nascent in India, is being explored as the next big opportunity, particularly off the Gujarat and Tamil Nadu coasts.

Nuclear power

Nuclear contributes a smaller but steady share, at roughly 8.78 GW of capacity. It offers reliable, low-carbon base-load power, and India has signalled plans to expand capacity through both large reactors and newer small modular reactor technology, positioning nuclear as a complement to intermittent renewables rather than a replacement for them.

Geothermal and other emerging sources

Geothermal energy remains at an early, exploratory stage in India, with potential sites identified in places like Puga Valley in Ladakh and Tattapani in Chhattisgarh. While it currently contributes negligible capacity to the grid, it represents the kind of long-horizon resource that could diversify India’s clean energy basket further as technology and investment mature.

Policy reforms and the road ahead

India’s energy story over the coming decade will be shaped by three interlinked priorities. First, closing the fossil fuel import gap by scaling domestic exploration alongside renewables, since heavy dependence on imported crude and gas remains a structural risk to the economy. Second, building the grid infrastructure, transmission lines, and battery or pumped-storage capacity needed to handle a power system where solar and wind contribute an ever-larger share; without this, renewable capacity additions risk being curtailed rather than used. Third, extending clean cooking energy to the roughly half of rural households still relying on biomass, since energy poverty and health outcomes are deeply connected.

The government’s 500 GW non-fossil capacity target by 2030 anchors much of current policy, supported by production-linked incentive schemes for domestic solar manufacturing, expanded green hydrogen missions, and continued reform of coal and power sector regulations. Meeting this target will require not just capacity additions but sustained investment in the technologies, especially storage, that make a renewables-heavy grid actually work in practice.
