Strong ICT infrastructure acts as a magnet for foreign direct investment (FDI). Multinational corporations looking to establish operations or expand into new markets prioritize locations with reliable internet connectivity, skilled tech workforce, and supportive digital ecosystems. This creates a virtuous cycle where ICT investments attract more business, which generates more demand for advanced ICT services, leading to further infrastructure development.

Countries like Estonia have successfully positioned themselves as attractive destinations for tech companies by investing early in digital infrastructure and creating business-friendly regulatory environments for technology firms.

Transforming agriculture through technology

Agriculture might seem like the sector least likely to benefit from advanced technology, but ICT has proven to be a game-changer for farmers worldwide. Modern agricultural applications of ICT include weather forecasting services, crop monitoring systems, market price information platforms, and precision farming techniques.

Consider a smallholder farmer who previously had to rely on local traders for market information. With mobile phone access and agricultural apps, the same farmer can now check commodity prices across different markets, choose the best time to sell, access weather forecasts to plan planting and harvesting, and even receive expert advice on crop diseases through photo-based diagnostic services.

For businesses, this connectivity enables global supply chains, remote collaboration, and access to international markets that would have been impossible without ICT infrastructure.

The manufacturing sector has undergone a significant transformation through ICT adoption. Industry 4.0 concepts like smart factories, IoT-enabled machinery, and artificial intelligence-driven quality control systems have made manufacturing more efficient, flexible, and responsive to market demands.
